Various frauds and scams have surfaced during the past; these scams are regrettable because of many reasons. Frauds in name of good causes are highly regrettable as people who are donating money for good causes are cheated. Some frauds and scams however, gained more media attention and were widely publicized.
1.French Scientology Fraud
The church of scientology has been found to have been involved in many scandals which are financial in nature. Among these is the well-known fraud trial of 1999 of the five of the French scientology officials. Each of these officials took a sum of 14,000 Euros from different church members in name of donation and purification and then this money was pocketed by them.
2.Nigerian 419 E-Mail Scams
Probably many of the internet users are familiar with this scam, a person by the name of Nndugu would ask for money for support. The name and the purpose of the support may change and vary in different mails but the objective of the mail would be the same want of financial assistance.
3.Tsunami Victim Scam
Mike and Carol Hall were killed in tsunami in 2004. This scam mails have floated the internet which say that if individuals can pretend to be their relatives, they may get a share of the inheritance. The condition they require is the remittance of an amount to the lawyers of the couple as trust fees.
4.Foundation of Hope Scam
This scam e-mail makes a very professional and convincing looking and sounding appeal to make donation to the disadvantaged Canadian youth but is actually a scam.
5.Virginia Tech Charity Scam
Following the VA Tech shooting, an official fund was created for the victims of the shooting. Following this a total of 25 fraudulent funds also appeared online.
6.Deniz Feneri Foundation Fraud
The lead organizer of this charity Aykut Zahid Akman along with several members of this organisation staff was convicted on grounds of fraud. They were found to be involved in the embezzlement of fund. Aykut Zahid Akman was sentenced to prison so was his staff.
7.Missouri AFCEF Charity Scam
This Washington based charity helps the children of the deceased soldiers with donations. A man who would place candy inside the local vending machines would claim to give this sales amount to the AFCEF. However, he was found out not to have any association with AFCEF.
8.ACORN
ACORN was an extremely well respected organization until the discovery of Dale Rathke embezzling the fund. Dale Rathke was the brother of the founder of ACORN, Wade Rathke. The money he embezzled was during 1999 and 2000. It later turned out that the company leadership knew about this embezzlement of fund.
9.Katrina Internet Scam
After the hurricane Katrina the estimate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation was that over 4,600 websites had emerged. Most of these websites claimed to collect money for the calamity hit people. The response of the federal government was prompt in shutting the fraudulent websites.
10.9/11 Charity Scams
9/11 tragedy also witnessed scam in the name of victims of 9/11. A former Navy officer was found to fake an injury to collect amount from victim’s fund.
