Format wars are extremely popular between audio and video industry. However, these wars have extended their expansibility to digital media as well. Have a look at some of the most famous format wars of all times. They have played a major part in changing the lives of millions and giving the world a better technological resource.
1. VHS-C vs. Video 8 – Camera Made Easy!
The Video 8 and VHS were two very popular mediums which would revolutionize the camera industry. Both of these recording cassettes waged a war to emerge victorious. The Video 8 was sponsored by Sony and was largely successful. However, the VHS was easy to use and people loved it. In the end, both of these mediums emerged victorious and popular.
2. DVD vs. DIVX – Emergence Of DVD
DVD vs. DIVX war is one that cannot be forgotten. DVD was a dedicated format of home videos. It served extremely well and people were quite interested in this new technology. However the DIVX did not remain behind and soon caught up with the popularity of DVD. The only drawback in the DIVX was that it could only be played for 48 hours and a fee was to be paid to watch it multiple times.
3. Super audio CD vs. DVD Audio – The Audio Wars
DVD disks were extremely popular and successful in the 90`s decade. Sony and Phillips fused to combine the Super Audio CD which soon became a wild frenzy. The Toshiba’s SACD was the competition now. The two brands focused upon compatibility and challenged the collectors to cope up with compatibility issues.
4. 8 Tracks vs. Cassette – Retro Rivalry
Stereo 8 debuted in the year 1964 and were extremely popular. It used a new technology and allowed data to be stored on it. Songs could be skipped on this medium which was considered a relief. Its competitor, the Cassette soon was marketed as a home product and tracked record sales of all times.
5. Sirius vs. XM – When Radio’s Battle It Out
XM and Sirius are two extremely popular brands. The Sirius and XM began the long rivalry for the Radio Satellite Rights. Early in the stages, XM had the advantage of twice more subscribers but that was leveled. Both the brands started to hire celebrities and well known figures for their branding.
6. Blue Ray vs. HD DVD – The Ultimate Prize
Blue Ray was developed by Sony. Its competitor was Toshiba which allied with Microsoft to bring in the HD DVD. Blue Ray disk was a great new technology. It was introduced to public in 2006 but with the passage of time, the rivalry grew. HD DVD and Blue Ray disks fought for the bragging rights but no clear victor emerged in this battle. Both of these technologies were very popular and dependable.
7. VHS and Betamax – VCR Wars!
VHS was a simple format which allowed users to record as much as 120 minutes of programming. However, Betamax became an instant hit with its superior resolution and picture quality. The only drawback was that its capacity was 60 minutes. The war between these two VCR brands was fought for 15 years until CD technology came to existence.
8. Disk Records and Wax Cylinders – Old School
The Wax Cylinder was developed by the great Thomas Edison in 1880. It was originally intended to record telephonic conversations and later went on to record quality music. However, Emilie Berliner produced the Disk Records which became an instant hit due to its economical range and cheap production costs. The Wax Cylinders ultimately had to accept submission.
9. Home Computing War – When Microsoft Was a Child
IMB and Mac were in a fierce war to take over the world computing industry. The home computers these brands introduced were extremely popular. However, the only problem which remained was that the accessories of these brands were not compatible with each other. This led to even more rapid and rigid marketing schemes and progressive and constructive war of development.
10. Alternating current vs. Direct current – Battle Of The legends
Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla were two commendable inventors and scientists. They involved in the most historic of format wars of all times. The war between Alternating and Direct Current. The Direct Current provided a stable voltage which could cause problems. Nikola Tesla made some alterations and introduced a better way to combat this problem by using Transformers.
