Confidence game or con is a crime which has a much more complex nature than the other crimes. It involves skills, acting and manipulating the victims. In the con game the victims are known as the marks.
Unlike theft or robbery here the victims or marks are swindled into handing over their money willingly. There may be many variations however we present some of the most common schemes.
The Savior
This is a very ancient and a widely used con game. In this two con men work with each other. First a man dressed as a robber or a thug will come up to you and rob you of your money. Just as this thug takes off another man, who is actually his accomplice will follow him.
He will always catch up to the robber and the robber will almost invariably get away. If this game is played out right then the conmen may get away with more money than expected. This is because the man might give him a reward.
The Animal Sack
In the middle ages pigs and cows were scarce and thus very valuable. Conmen saw an opportunity in this. They offered to sale baby pigs to people. After receiving the amount they would hand over a sack which had a live animal in it.
If the buyer neglected to check the bag they would later discover that the sack had a cat in it.
Horse race Betting
This was a very elaborate scam. A group of conmen would swindle a rich man into believing about a fake race. He would then place a bet with a fake bookie. The amount of money placed on the bet would b e large.
During the fake race, some sort of mistake results into a loss for the mark.
The Valuable Violin
This con required two conmen. First will be an old man with a violin eating a dinner at a hotel. After seeing the bill he will say that he cannot pay the bill. He entrusts his violin to the manger and promises to return with the money.
The second man will pose as a dealer in rare instruments. He will appear interested in the instrument and will declare it to be worth thousands of dollars. He will appear in a hurry and would leave his card. If done right the manager will attempt to buy that violin and will be left with it.
Black mail
This is an old trick used to swindle people. This requires at least one female con. The female will flirt with the male victim and take him to the room.
Once in the room photos of the victim will be taken in intimate moment. These photos will then be used to black mail that person.
Bangkok Scam
This con was played on tourists. From different passing conmen the tourist will be given advice to buy some emeralds and to ship it off to their own country.
If played out correctly the tourist is led to an emerald shop where he buys some gems and ships it off. Once he reaches there he is left with nothing more than invaluable stones.
The Card game
In this game three cards are placed face down. The cards are then shuffled and are asked to guess the location of the queen. If the trickster is experience then he will shuffle the card and decide who wins or losses.
The Princess scam
In this scam you get a letter from a person trapped in prison pretending to be very rich. This person demands some help and also promises a reward in return. However if you send the money they are gone forever.
Quick interest
This scheme is simple yet very cunning. A business man will ask for an investment in return for a huge interest in a few days. In this manner he will collect from a lot of people.
At first it may appear that he is giving interest. He will however simply be taking money from one hand and giving it to the other. Once he gets his desired amount he will take all the cash and flee leaving you waiting forever.
